Ingredient: Monensin Premix 20%/40%

Core Indications

 Prevention of Coccidiosis

Target Species & Eimeria Strains

Animal CategorySpecific SpeciesKey Eimeria Strains Targeted
PoultryBroiler Chickens– Eimeria tenella (cecal coccidiosis, lethal)- E. acervulina (intestinal coccidiosis)- E. maxima (jejunal coccidiosis)- E. necatrix (severe intestinal damage)
PoultryTurkey Poults– Eimeria adenoeides (intestinal coccidiosis)- E. meleagrimitis (duodenal coccidiosis)
RuminantsBeef & Dairy Calves– Eimeria bovis (intestinal coccidiosis)- E. zuernii (hemorrhagic coccidiosis)
RuminantsLambs– Eimeria ovinoidalis (primary pathogenic strain)- E. crandallis

Growth Promotion (Beef Cattle Only)

In beef cattle (including feedlot cattle and growing calves), Monensin Premix improves feed conversion efficiency (more weight gain per kg of feed consumed) and increases average daily gain (ADG). It achieves this by:

Modulating rumen microbial populations to reduce methane production (less energy wasted as gas).

Promoting the growth of bacteria that produce propionate (a key energy source for cattle), instead of acetate and butyrate.

This indication is exclusive to beef cattle—monensin is not approved as a growth promoter for dairy cattle, sheep, or poultry.

Prohibited Species (Critical!)

Monensin has an extremely narrow safety margin in non-target species; even small doses can cause fatal toxicity. It is strictly forbidden for:

Dairy cows (lactating or dry): Toxic to dairy cattle; also, residues may contaminate milk.

Horses, donkeys, mules: Lethal even at doses as low as 1 mg/kg body weight (signs: colic, muscle tremors, cardiac failure).

Pigs, dogs, cats: Highly toxic; no approved use.

Egg-laying hens (layers): Not approved for coccidiosis prevention in layers (may reduce egg production and cause residue risks).

Dosage

(1) Poultry: Coccidiosis Prevention

Poultry SpeciesActive Monensin in FeedPremix Dosage Example (for 20% Monensin Premix)Duration of Use
Broiler Chickens90–110 mg/kg feed0.45–0.55 g/kg feed (450–550 g/ton of feed)Day 1 of life until 5–7 days before slaughter (withdrawal period).
Turkey Poults50–60 mg/kg feed0.25–0.3 g/kg feed (250–300 g/ton of feed)Day 1 to 12 weeks of life (or until moved to low-risk housing).

(2) Ruminants: Coccidiosis Prevention

Ruminant SpeciesActive Monensin in FeedPremix Dosage Example (for 20% Monensin Premix)Duration of Use
Beef/Dairy Calves15–30 mg/kg feed0.075–0.15 g/kg feed (75–150 g/ton of feed)Start at 2–3 weeks old; continue until 8–12 weeks old (end of high coccidiosis risk).
Lambs10–20 mg/kg feed0.05–0.1 g/kg feed (50–100 g/ton of feed)Start at 2 weeks old; continue until 6 weeks old.

(3) Beef Cattle: Growth Promotion

Beef Cattle CategoryActive Monensin in FeedPremix Dosage Example (for 20% Monensin Premix)Duration of Use
Growing Calves20–25 mg/kg DM feed0.1–0.125 g/kg feed (100–125 g/ton of feed)Start at weaning; continue until entering the feedlot.
Feedlot Cattle25–33 mg/kg DM feed0.125–0.165 g/kg feed (125–165 g/ton of feed)From arrival at the feedlot until 5–7 days before slaughter.

Withdrawal Period

Animal SpeciesWithdrawal Period for Meat

Never slaughter animals before the withdrawal period ends—violations result in food safety penalties or product recalls.
