Ingredient: Decoquinate 6%

Core Indication:

Prevention of Coccidiosis

The primary and only approved indication of Decoquinate 6% Premix is the prevention of coccidiosis in susceptible animal species.

It is not effective for treating established coccidiosis (i.e., when clinical signs like diarrhea or intestinal damage are already present)

Target Animal Species and Efficacy

(1) Ruminants (Cattle, Sheep, Goats)

Ruminants are highly susceptible to coccidiosis, especially young calves, lambs, and kids (1–3 months old). Decoquinate 6% Premix is a key tool for preventing infection in both dairy and beef herds/flocks.

Animal SpeciesTarget Eimeria Strains (Common Pathogens)Key Notes
Beef & Dairy Calves– Eimeria bovis (causes severe intestinal coccidiosis)- Eimeria zuernii (causes hemorrhagic coccidiosis, often fatal in calves)Most critical for calves 3–8 weeks old (highest risk of infection); prevents post-weaning diarrhea linked to coccidiosis.
Lambs– Eimeria ovinoidalis (primary pathogenic strain in sheep)- Eimeria crandallisUsed for lambs 2–6 weeks old; protects against coccidiosis in pasture-based or intensive rearing systems.
Kids (Goats)– Eimeria ninakohlyakimovae (most pathogenic in goats)- Eimeria arloingiEssential for goat kids 2–8 weeks old; prevents weight loss and diarrhea in dairy or meat goat operations.

(2) Poultry (Broilers, Turkeys)

In poultry, Decoquinate 6% Premix is used to prevent coccidiosis in commercial broiler flocks and turkey poults, where the disease reduces growth rates and meat yield.

Animal SpeciesTarget Eimeria Strains (Common Pathogens)Key Notes
Broiler Chickens– Eimeria tenella (cecal coccidiosis)- Eimeria acervulina (intestinal coccidiosis)- Eimeria maxima (jejunal coccidiosis)Used from day 1 of life to slaughter (with withdrawal period); compatible with most broiler production cycles.
Turkey Poults– Eimeria adenoeides (intestinal coccidiosis)- Eimeria meleagrimitis (duodenal coccidiosis)Approved for poults 1–12 weeks old; prevents coccidiosis in both indoor and free-range turkey systems.

Prohibited Species

Do not use Decoquinate 6% Premix in the following species, as it is either ineffective or unapproved:

Egg-laying hens (layers): No approval for coccidiosis prevention in layers; may affect egg quality (no residue risks, but lack of efficacy data).

Pigs: Ineffective against porcine Eimeria strains; use other anticoccidials (e.g., amprolium) instead.

Dosage:

(1) Ruminants (Cattle, Sheep, Goats)

Animal SpeciesDaily Active Decoquinate DoseDecoquinate 6% Premix per kg of Feed (Based on Average Feed Intake)Duration of Use
Calves0.5 mg/kg BW2.5–5 g/kg feed (for calves eating 1–2 kg of feed/day)Start at 3 weeks old; continue until 8 weeks old (or until risk of coccidiosis ends).
Lambs0.5 mg/kg BW2–4 g/kg feed (for lambs eating 0.8–1.5 kg of feed/day)Start at 2 weeks old; continue until 6 weeks old.
Kids0.5 mg/kg BW2–4 g/kg feed (for kids eating 0.8–1.5 kg of feed/day)Start at 2 weeks old; continue until 8 weeks old.

Example Calculation for Calves: A 50 kg calf needs 25 mg of active decoquinate daily (0.5 mg/kg × 50 kg). If the calf eats 2 kg of feed/day, each kg of feed must contain 12.5 mg of active decoquinate. Since the premix is 6% (60,000 mg decoquinate/kg premix), add 0.208 g of Decoquinate 6% Premix per kg of feed (12.5 mg ÷ 60,000 mg/kg = 0.000208 kg = 0.208 g).

(2) Poultry (Broilers, Turkeys)
