Indication

Growth Promotion (Primary Use)

Improve feed conversion efficiency (FCE).

Increase average daily gain (ADG) in target species.

It achieves this by: Inhibiting the overgrowth of harmful gram-positive bacteria in the gut, which reduces subclinical inflammation and nutrient competition (e.g., bacteria consuming dietary protein/energy).

Optimizing the gut microbiome balance, favoring beneficial bacteria (e.g., Lactobacillus spp.) that support nutrient absorption (especially carbohydrates and proteins).

This results in faster growth, reduced feed waste, and shorter production cycles—critical for commercial livestock and poultry farming.

Gut Health Prophylaxis

Flavomycin helps prevent subclinical gut disorders caused by pathogenic gram-positive bacteria, reducing the risk of:

Intestinal dysbiosis (imbalanced gut flora) in weaned piglets and young poultry.

Mild enteritis (intestinal inflammation) in fattening cattle and broilers, which can go undetected but still impair growth.

Reduced nutrient absorption due to gut lining damage from harmful bacteria.

Prohibited Uses (Critical!)

Egg-laying hens (layers): Not approved—no growth benefit for laying birds, and unnecessary exposure to feed additives.

Lactating dairy cows: Forbidden—flavomycin residues may contaminate milk (though its safety margin is high, regulatory restrictions apply).

Breeding animals (sows, boars, breeding cattle, sheep): No growth promotion benefit; use is unnecessary and not approved.

Companion animals (dogs, cats): Not intended for pets—no indication for gut health or growth in companion species.

Therapeutic use: Cannot be used to treat clinical infections (e.g., diarrhea, pneumonia); it is a feed additive, not a therapeutic antibiotic.

Dosage

Dosages are standardized by grams of premix per ton of feed (to ensure uniform intake of active flavomycin). The 4% concentration means 1 kg of premix contains 40 g of active flavomycin. As noted, flavomycin has a 1-day withdrawal period for most meat-producing animals (pigs, poultry, cattle, sheep) in most regions.
