Bacitracin Zinc Premix

Animal CategoryTarget Infections & PathogensClinical Scenario & Benefit
Poultry (Broilers, Turkey Poults)– Necrotic Enteritis (NE): Caused by Clostridium perfringens (Type A/C)- Omphalitis (Navel Infection): Caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp.- Bacterial Dermatitis: Caused by Staphylococcus spp.– Prevents NE (severe intestinal necrosis, 10–50% mortality in broilers) and reduces outbreak severity.- Lowers early chick/poult mortality (1–7 days old) from navel infections.- Minimizes skin defects (e.g., hock burn) in broilers, improving carcass quality.
Swine (Weaned Piglets, Grow-Finish Pigs)– Post-Weaning Diarrhea (PWD): Targets Clostridium perfringens (Type C) (co-pathogen with E. coli)- Mild Porcine Dysentery: Adjunct control of Brachyspira hyodysenteriae (with other antibiotics)– Reduces PWD-related growth stunting by suppressing gram-positive bacteria that worsen intestinal damage.- Supports recovery from mild dysentery by limiting secondary gram-positive infections.
Cattle (Beef Calves, Pre-Lactating Dairy Calves)– Calf Diphtheria: Caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum, Staphylococcus spp.- Calf Enteritis: Caused by Clostridium perfringens (Type C)– Prevents/treats oral ulcers and throat inflammation in 1–3-month-old calves, reducing appetite loss and pneumonia risk.- Controls clostridial enteritis in intensive calf rearing systems.

Growth Promotion

By inhibiting harmful gram-positive bacteria in the gut, Bacitracin Zinc 15% Premix reduces subclinical inflammation and nutrient competition, improving feed conversion efficiency (FCE) (more weight gain per kg of feed) and average daily gain (ADG).

Growth Performance & Feed Efficiency

Broilers:

Supplementation at 11–55 mg/kg (equivalent to 0.73–3.67 g/ton of 15% premix) improves feed conversion ratio (FCR) by 2.5–4.7% and daily weight gain by 2.5–7% compared to control groups.

Higher doses (e.g., 550 mg/kg) may not enhance growth further but can reduce relative deep pectoral muscle development.

Laying Hens:

At 10–50 mg/kg (0.67–3.33 g/ton of 15% premix), bacitracin zinc increases egg production by 4–7%, egg weight by 4.8%, and shell strength by 6%.

It also mitigates the negative impact of heat stress, improving feed intake and egg quality during hot weather.

This is approved for:

Broilers: Shortens production cycles and improves flock uniformity.

Weaned Piglets: Mitigates post-weaning growth checks.

Beef Calves: Supports early growth for efficient fattening later.

Target Species & Prohibited Uses

Approved Species (Age-Specific)

SpeciesApproved Age/Production Stage
PoultryBroilers (0–42 days), turkey poults (0–12 weeks), growing ducks (0–6 weeks)
SwineWeaned piglets (3–8 weeks), grow-finish pigs (8 weeks to slaughter)
CattleBeef calves (1–6 months), pre-lactating dairy calves (1–3 months; stop 30 days before calving)

Prohibited Uses (Critical!)

Egg-laying hens (layers): Bacitracin zinc accumulates in eggs, exceeding food safety residue limits.

Lactating dairy cows: Residues transfer to milk; only for pre-lactating calves.

Breeding animals (sows, boars, breeding cattle): No growth/infection benefit; unnecessary residue risk.

Companion animals (dogs, cats): Not approved—use pet-specific bacitracin formulations.
